Choosing a Service that suits you:

Cellular Phones are becoming the way of the future. A recent study showed that 3 out of 10 American's, aged 18 to 29, used a cellular phone as their primary phone as opposed to a conventional land line or pay phone.

Mobile phones appear much more convenient. There are clearly problems associated with the convenience! For starters both the contract and prepaid versions are more expensive. The average wire-less phone bill is currently around $50.00 a month. This equates to $600 a year. Even after paying these astronomical bills, the latest study in the USA, showed that one-third of all mobile customers are unhappy with their cellular providers and are considering changing them. Most customers who have already changed say they switched because they wanted better service or better per minute rates.

Studies of the big brand name service providers including: Sprint PCS, Verizon Wireless, Cingular, Nextel, AT&T Wireless and T-Mobile revealed the following problems:-

Billing Problems: Customers complained of persisting billing problems, such as over-charging or mistakes. Some carriers were less responsive that others to their individual problems. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) received it's fair share of complaints about cellular phone billing problems.
As a matter of principle, if you are unhappy with an item, query it with your carrier. Particular care should be taken with itemised billing and special items such as network surcharges, connection fees, itemised billing fees and SMS charges.

Poor Phone Service:
This is the leading reason people change their phone carriers. Customers complain about no service, dropped calls, line noise and static. The FCC receives more than 150 calls a month about poor phone service.

Companies make it hard to switch:
Over a third of the respondents said they were contemplating changing carriers. Most hadn't done anything about it because a change means a new phone number and in all probability a large early termination fee. Work is afoot to allow customers to keep their numbers in the event of a carrier swap. This is made difficult in the US by the variety of systems available.

The best protection you can get is to make sure you choose the right calling plan and the right carrier from the start. The choice of instrument is inconsequential relative to these two decisions.
Here are some guide lines to assist you in choosing a cellular phone company:
  • Ask your family, friends and business associates. This is the probably the most reliable way to find a good carrier.
  • Pick the calling plan that suits you.
  • Beware of the "free minutes" sales pitch with hidden costs.
  • Examine the smaller details - like when do "free" minutes apply, weekend calling and roaming.
  • Take advantage of a trial period if offered.
